CAMBRIDGE City Council is backing a scheme that encourages people to refill water bottles at locations around Cambridge and avoid using single-use plastic.

Cambridge now features on the free nationwide ‘Refill’ app, which currently shows 58 locations in the city where people can fill up water bottles for free, including at Cambridge’s city centre market and the kiosk at Christ’s Pieces.

Any business or organisation can sign up to join the scheme. Participating cafes, bars, restaurants, banks, galleries, museums or other businesses can sign up as a refill station via the Refill website or app.

People can download the free Refill app, which shows all the refill points in Cambridge on an interactive map from, Google Play or the Apple App Store.

Refill is a national campaign that aims to make refilling bottles as easy, convenient and cheap as possible by introducing refill points on every street. The council’s support forms part of the council’s work to tackle waste, reduce carbon emissions and address climate change in the city.

Cllr Rosy Moore, Executive Councillor for Environmental Services and City Centre, said: “This is an innovative scheme which is ultimately aimed at reducing the amount of plastic used in Cambridge and nationwide. Our support forms part of our ongoing work to reduce carbon emissions and tackle the effects of climate change.

“Every time someone refills a reusable bottle, it means that one less plastic bottle is purchased. If just one in ten people in the UK refilled once a week rather than buying a drink in a plastic bottle, there could be 340 million less plastic bottles in circulation.

“I would encourage any local business or organisation to play a part and sign up for Refill, and for residents to support those who participate.”

Businesses or organisations wishing to join up with the scheme can email parks@cambridge.gov.uk for more information.
